Welcome to Mr. Smith's page
Week of August 26th, 2019:
This week in Mr. Smith's math class, we dove into Unit 1: Place Value and Multidigit Addition and Subtraction. In lesson 1-1, the students explored place value through the hundred thousands. We also learned that any time you move one place value to the left, the value of the digit increases ten times. Next week, we will continue working through unit 1.
This week in Mr. Smith's science class, we kicked off science by talking about how scientists know so much. We came to the conclusion that good scientists observe the world around them and ask lots of questions. This curiosity leads them to new discoveries which then leads to more questions! We had a neat lesson where the students observed and asked questions about an everyday object: their hands! The questions they came up with were amazing! This weekend, encourage your child to observe and ask questions about something they see on a daily basis!
This week in Mr. Smith's ELA class, we focused on reader's workshop and writer's workshop routines. In reading, we began our first read aloud of the year titled The Tiger Rising by Kate DiCamillo . Throughout this book, we will learn how to think about our story and develop quality ideas about our books. This week we practiced reading with intensity. We can do this by asking questions and reading as if we are a part of the book. Next week, we will continue this work. In writing, we discussed where in our lives we use and see writing. We then heard a book about a character that develops a magical potion. We then made a list of ingredients we would put in our own magical potions and what our potions would do. This is just the beginning of a long list of writing ideas we can use to help us come up with stories in our writing journals. Next week, we will take one of these ideas and begin to write a story!
Have a great long weekend!!
